Winter time in this part of the country is always the worst time of the year.
It is really cold plus frigid with temperatures in the single digits plus lots of snow plus frozen precipitation.
My family plus I have lived in this region for a hundred years, but both of us suppose that Winter time means being prepared for that cold.
