When I was in girl scouts, we often went on camping trips.
Toward the end of the season, it was getting nippy at night.
There was a firepit where we cooked our food and boiled water, but it did very little to give us any warmth. We all pulled our sleeping bags as close to the firepit as possible, hoping to get some warmth. We couldn’t figure out why our scout leader wasn’t complaining about the cold, because she didn’t like camping. We looked over and there she was in her sleeping bag, and she appeared to be comfortable. We couldn’t understand why she was comfortable, but we weren’t. We all had the same girl scout regulation sleeping bags. The next morning, I asked her how she could be so warm all night? She showed me a small portable heater she bought. She had one portable heater near her feet and another portable heater in the middle of the sleeping bag. She told me she didn’t go anywhere without them. Normally, she would sleep in the tent with the other leaders. There was a fireplace and a furnace in the lodge house, but the tents just had a small heating system. We all enjoyed camping, but sometimes we wished we could be in the heat with the leaders. When we started saying it wasn’t fair that the leaders had furnaces and fireplaces, she agreed it was wrong. I think that’s why she bought the portable heaters and started sleeping outside with the rest of us. I didn’t care if she slept inside, but she could have taken us with her.
