Recalling Summer without air conditioning

Who knows, this could be my last go around with this sort of Summer.

  • That’s the one thing about being in your 90’s, you just don’t know which day is your last.

And that’s not a morbid thing as much as it’s just my reality. I’m in pretty good mental shape for 92. And as far as my body goes, it’s about worn down. So I pretty much stay inside the central air conditioning much of the Summer these days. It’s not so bad as I’m not a big heat and humidity enthusiast either. Plus, we have a sunroom off the back of the house that has a ductless heat pump. That little wonder of HVAC technology does a great job of providing crisp, cooling comfort in the sunroom. It’s actually just a big deal for me to have air conditioning at all. I’m old enough to remember a time when there was no such thing as residential HVAC. And I grew up down here where the heat and humidity have always been rough over the Summer months and into September. I can remember the days back when air conditioning was something that we actually went to experience. I grew up in a rural farming community and we’d heard of air conditioning. There was a department store about an hour away by car that actually had some form of commercial HVAC. I still remember the very first time I walked from the broiling, moist heat of Summer right into the cooling comfort of air conditioning. It honestly felt like a bit of magic to me. I’ve seen a lot of convenience some along that I could do without. But having air conditioning sure wasn’t one of them.
