When I was in college, I made a friend in the study group who invited me to meet her grandparents, the people responsible for her interest in learning.
The libraries I’ve been to are perfectly warm, but the house where a friend of mine had her happiest childhood had the best heating system I’ve ever encountered. My coworker and I had intended to spend the weekend there. When my friend and I first entered the condo, we were struck by its immaculate condition. When I walked in, the floor was warm and it wasn’t the carpet, which was a surprise because I was expecting an old condo with a great library and maybe some cool features. Ola’s grandpa was in the bookstore where I was and saw my expression. He blamed the hydronic heating system. I don’t remember how it transpired, but I ended up having a frank discussion with the Grandpa about the specifics of the heating and air conditioning systems in their condo and how he always made sure they had timely Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) maintenance. Another of his grandchildren worked in HVAC, and he was the one who first told his family about the hybrid heating system they now use. The unique combination of heat pump and heating system in this apparatus impressed him greatly. Surprisingly, the expert from the family’s heating company was visiting that weekend to perform the necessary maintenance on the heater, and I got to meet him. He was just as impressive as Grandpa had said, and I ended up going with him to help a family friend with some boiler maintenance in the neighborhood. I’ll tell my kids that the guy who specialized in heating systems at a dealership is now my partner.
