Types of lighting

A fairly inexpensive and simple home improvement is new lighting.

From ceiling fixtures and sconces to lamps, there is a nearly endless selection of sizes, styles and prices ranges, with each one providing different uses and benefits.

In my opinion, determining the right kind of light for each room is as important as picking out furniture. While some types of light might fulfill the same purpose, the exact figure can greatly impact the value, enjoyment, ambience and decor of the home. Lighting can create the illusion of space, set a mood, improve security or heighten functionality of the area. Ambient lighting offers a soft glow, providing enough light to complete tasks without creating an unpleasant glare. Ambient lighting is an ideal option for rooms where family members want to relax. Recessed lights, chandeliers, pendants and wall sconces all provide ambient light. While recessed lights are very clean and modern looking, chandeliers, pendants and sconces can be contemporary, rustic, traditional or make a dramatic statement. Task lighting produces more concentrated light that is better for an office or work setting. It is designed to accommodate reading, sewing, writing, cooking and jobs where being able to see clearly is important. Some options for task lighting include desk and floor lamps, pendants, track lights, vanity lights and under-cabinet lights. Accent lighting is a specialized style of light that is used to draw attention to a focal point. It doesn’t light up the whole room but adds style or drama. It can be used to showcase furniture, artwork or outdoor features in the yard.
