Installing a hydronic furnace into our crawl space

There are some things I never imagined we’d enjoy as a family.

There is also floor heating. My partner and I had to renovate much of the house after inheriting it from my grandparents, but routine furnace maintenance was sufficient to keep the existing furnace operational. They had installed the furnace after the boiler repair failed, as the fireplace was insufficient to keep them warm. It was an urgent project, so my colleague and I should have paid more attention to how much we’d get from the house, as neither of us was enthusiastic about the furnace/heater upgrade. During a routine HVAC repair, the technician informed my coworker and me that our heat and air conditioning unit was beginning to fail, and we needed to consider a replacement. When the one my coworker and I had failed, I had to ask the heating dealership representative what he thought was our best chance for a reliable replacement. He mentioned that our crawl space was suitable for hydronic heating and radiant floors as an added bonus. I was so excited about the prospect that I paid little attention to the hybrid heating. Until my partner mentioned it, he also suggested that my associate and I could choose the heat pump and boiler option. It appeared more trustworthy. My friend and I were currently arguing over the best option. The hybrid option provided both heating and cooling, so my associate and I did not need to install additional equipment for my option to work. My friend and I argued about it in the mornings until my colleague and I decided to contact an expert from the heating company to help us resolve our differences. My friend and I both eventually got our way.

Hydronic heating was ruining floors, so we gave up

When my colleague and I first purchased our home, the floor heating was something we looked forward to every time the floor furnace turned on.

  • However, the hydronic heating had worn me out.

Two years later, I began to notice a change in the appearance of the floors, which I did not appreciate. During one of the HVAC repair visits, the repairman mentioned that this occurs in homes that use a comparable heat and air conditioning product. In short, the heating system was causing damage to the floor. It had to do with the concept of expansion and contraction and how temperature changes affected the wood. I turned off the equipment and began utilizing the furnace by itself. The furnace/heater upgrade was not as efficient as I had hoped, so I was forced to replace it with whatever the heating dealership recommended. My friend and I decided after a brief consultation to add a heat pump to the existing equipment to create a hybrid heater. It seemed more feasible than any of the other ideas I had in mind. My friend and I no longer had to discard anything other than the floor. The plan would also make furnace repair more manageable because I would no longer have to maintain three different types of equipment. When I changed the floors, I still had to keep the boiler meant to maintain hydronic functionality in good working order in order to avoid eventual boiler repair. Since I needed my children to be away from the house, I planned to keep the floors for two years while I figured out the best way and time to complete the project.

We could not install hydronic heating until my associate and I changed the floor in our home

I’ve always wanted floor heating in my home, especially since my teenagers dislike socks and indoor shoes and prefer to go barefoot! My friend and I use a furnace as a heater, and the floors are now always warm enough! When the HVAC repairman came around for HVAC repair, I asked him for a solution, and he suggested that my associate and I try a hydronic furnace for the house and love radiant floors.

It sounded like a feasible plan; all I needed to do was go to the heating company and see what they had in stock.

I was interested in the heat and A/C product because it sounded like the solution to my problem, but at the heating dealership, I explained what I wanted for my home and why, and they asked me to understand the type of floor I had, but unfortunately, it did not fall within the list of floors suitable for radiant floors, so my associate and I were unable to proceed with the project as planned, and they recommended a hybrid furnace that combines a heat pump and an oil boiler. My associate and I were unable to continue with furnace repair, and changing our entire floor was an intimidating project to attempt before dealing with our comfort concerns. As my colleague and I waited to replace our flooring, the installation of the hybrid system appeared to be the simplest. I did more research on radiant floors and realized we’d need a boiler to go with it. I was concerned about boiler repair and safety, so I decided to abandon the idea because we’d have two boilers to worry about until my associate and I were ready to do everything separately without having to worry about it; for the furnace/heater upgrade, my associate and I opted for a high-efficiency furnace/heater.

Distractions from my mother-in-law and the heating tech

I’m an expert procrastinator and caught myself watching an Eckhart Tolle video on YouTube when I should be making progress with my work.

However, the video reminded me that I need to place some of my attention on my breathing while I’m engaging in work and other activities in my daily life so that I don’t lose myself in what I’m doing. A good warning sign that I’ve lost myself in what I’m doing is when irritation and anger arise for no apparent reason; in which case I should place some awareness on my breathing to help me be at peace. Working on the computer, doing HVAC tech stories, and putting this into practice is certainly a challenge. Another challenge I have right now is my mother-in-law, who’s prowling around the house with the vacuum cleaner, distracting me from my work. The HVAC business I work for requires a high degree of concentration and focus, something I cannot do if there is noise in the background while I’m trying to work. It was the same, when the heating technician came in the other day to fix the electric furnace, and had to escape to a local cafe when I couldn’t stand the interruptions any longer. My mother-in-law is a cleaning maniac and a tidy tyrant; she drives my girlfriend and me crazy with her germaphobic obsessiveness. She’s already cleaned the air conditioner twice this week, even though there was no need for it. She’s always having a go at us for not being clean and tidy enough. I guess it’s a matter of perspective since, in our own eyes, we are very clean and tidy people.
