Heating bills came down after I found draft source

Once that was buttoned up, there was zero drafty feeling in the house

I knew there was a draft in our house and I also knew that it was a pretty significant. But for the first 2 Winters that we lived in this house, I was still pretty stupid when it came to preparing a house for Winter. I’m not stupid in general but more really about all the stuff that goes with a real Winter. I’m from the deep south where Winter is a time where you may have to put on long pants and a sweater. But that would be a severe case of cold. The only thing I ever discussed when it came to the HVAC was the cooling part of that acronym. Heating was not something I knew anything about. We had to move up here for my wife’s job and will be here another few years it looks like. I really didn’t know what I was doing when it came to the gas furnace or getting the house ready for Winter. Like I did at home, I called the HVAC professionals to schedule HVAC maintenance. Thankfully, the HVAC technician helped me understand how to help myself when it came to lowering our heating costs. I just had to follow the step in order to seal the house up really well. Once I did that correctly, the source of the major draft became totally obvious. It turned out to be that one of the new, double paned windows was installed without any sort of insulation. Once that was buttoned up, there was zero drafty feeling in the house. Along with the Winter prep, sealing that draft source turned our house into a toasty spot this Winter and we saved a ton on heating expenses.

Alone without HVAC fits the crime

At least there won’t be a repeat of what happened in August of last year.

This time, I’m going into the Summer months without fear of my heat pump dying and the lying is over.

I hate to lie. It’s just the worst feeling and whenever I do it, I just feel terrible. But last Spring, I chose to not tell my wife that the HVAC technician had given me a heads up about the HVAC unit. We always get an air conditioning tune-up each Spring. This is the matching piece to the heating maintenance we get in the Fall. Although, the air conditioning tune up might be more important. While it does sometimes get cold enough to have the heat pump kick on in the Winter, that’s pretty unusual. What’s not unusual is having that same heat pump run day and night to provide cooling comfort during the Summer months. After getting the info on the old heat pump, I chose to keep that to myself because I wasn’t prepared financially to replace the residential HVAC. For sure, the lie came from a place of embarrassment. I’m always talking about being mindful of our finances. And yet, I had HVAC equipment that was more than 25 years old but hadn’t yet started saving for the new HVAC unit. So I tried my best to ease the load on the heat pump last Summer. But of course, the heat pump died at the beginning of August and I had to come clean about the whole deal. My wife ended up taking our son to her parents where they have the very latest in residential HVAC. I got to stay at home and take care of the cat without any air conditioning but a window unit I borrowed and put inside our bedroom.

Time for real air conditioning again

I’m so thankful that the renovations on our home were completed in April. It’s sort of weird that after almost two years, there is no more construction going on in our home. Finally, we are chilling out in the best residential HVAC we’ve ever experienced. Our home is now exactly that. For the longest time, it was an old house that we were trying very hard to bring back to its prime while also making it a home. This was a big undertaking and the past two Summers were tough. The first Summer, we lived inside a camper out front of the house. That’s right, we lived here in the deep south without central air conditioning. Frankly, the camper was pretty comfortable when it came to the cooling. It was far better when it came to air conditioning than what we endured last Summer. We thought we were upgrading last Summer to at least being inside with window air conditioning units. But there was so much going on inside the house that we really couldn’t leave them on. So we’d try to huddle up close to an air conditioning unit in order to just sleep without breaking a sweat. All of that is over and in a way, it seems like such a long time ago even though it was just last year. No, we are quite pleased to be going into another sizzling Summer with just the best residential HVAC one could own. The smart thermostat will take care of us just fine this Summer and we’re awfully happy about that.

Unable to fix running toilet

I recently had a problem with a toilet that wouldn’t quit running.

  • Unfortunately, I noticed the concern in the middle of the night.

I took the lid off the tank and realized that if I elevated the float arm, the toilet quit running. I tried making adjustments to the arm but had no success. I managed to prop a butter knife on the side of the tank and wedge it under the float arm to maintain elevation. This stopped the toilet from running so that I could get some sleep. In the morning, I googled how to repair the toilet as a DIY project. I took a picture with my smartphone of the components within the tank and headed to my local hardware store. Because of the age of my toilet, none of the available parts were exactly the same as my original parts. I consulted with an employee of the hardware store who made a recommendation. I then returned home with my new toilet parts and assembled the necessary tools for the job. I found a Youtube video with step by step instructions. The first step was to shut off the water to the toilet. That is when I discovered that the shut-off valve to the toilet was also broken. No matter how I twisted that valve, the water kept running. After googling instructions for repairing the valve, I decided to contact a licensed plumber. I no longer felt confident in my abilities and was totally frustrated with the whole project. I was willing to pay just about anything to have a properly working toilet.
