It’s tough living so far from my mother.

It’s not so much that I’m just a straight up mama’s boy, which I am in fact.

But it’s more that she’s in a stage of her life where she just needs way more help. My sister lives about 20 minutes away and she checks in quite frequently. Still, I worry about things like the heating and cooling, her car and making her house safe. Mom doesn’t move around the way she once did. However, she doesn’t want to acknowledge any of this as that just isn’t the way she’s built. Dad died when we were young children. He died completely unexpectedly and my mom had to carry on without him. She had us to raise and that was her first order of business. It had to have been tough to just pay the air conditioning bills on what she made as a substitute teacher. So now that I’m making a very nice living, I really have been committed to making her life a bit easier where I can. To that end, I travel up there for a couple of weeks like 3 times a year. My job allows me to work remotely when I need to which makes these trips possible. This last trip, my sister and I did a lot of things for mom. The main thing on my agenda was upgrading the HVAC equipment. Normally, my mom wouldn’t allow such a thing as she didn’t want to be a burden. But this time, she was simply thankful to get the central air conditioning updated. The new residential HVAC is really something and she even has a smart thermostat. I love the fact that she now has an app on her smart phone so she can adjust her air conditioning without having to get up.

That’s how we got turned on to the ductless heat pump

Sometimes family just has to come first and that’s what I’m experiencing now. My mom is living with us now and we are all trying to adjust a bit. We have two girls in college and one son that’s still here with us inside the central air conditioning of our home. When dad died a few years ago, mom tried to keep going with the home that they had shared. But it proved to be just too much for her both physically and emotionally. So with my husband’s help, we had the residential HVAC replaced and sold her house. We had hoped to have enough to put her up in a condo or something. But that wasn’t going to workout. So my husband and I figured we could put an addition on our home and she could stay with us. She’s not in the best shape so really, that made the most sense. And this way, we’re also adding value to our home and mom can put that money in her savings. The space is actually quite nice and could be like a cool apartment even. She has her own entrance as well as her own bathroom, tub and shower. Mom’s space also comes with its own heating and cooling in the form of a ductless heat pump. The HVAC company explained that we simply couldn’t add that amount of air volume to our existing heating and cooling equipment. It would simply overwhelm that HVAC unit. That’s how we got turned on to the ductless heat pump. The HVAC professionals installed it for us and wow, I’m so impressed with the level of quality heating and air this HVAC technology provides.

When you are the dad of 3 beautiful daughters, you tend to be pretty good at being both the good cop and the bad cop.

• It’s just a truth that my wife pretty much runs the show inside the central air conditioning of the house.

And she can be pretty exacting when holding the girls accountable. She doesn’t put up with excuses for any deviation from the rules. So I have to sometimes play the good cop and sit down in the air conditioning to talk to one of the girls after she gets blasted by mom. But when it comes to them dating, I’m the best bad cop you’ve ever seen. I can remember walking into the central air conditioning of my first girlfriend’s house for the first time. I had my license and had borrowed dad’s car for this date. That’s where I got my first lesson in being the bad cop. My girlfriend’s dad took me into his den and made it extremely clear just how precious his daughter was. And that I was on the hook for her safety any time she left the air conditioning of that house. It’s basically the same bad cop move that I use now that I’m the one scared to death to let my little girls get into a car with someone. But when it comes to policing the heating and cooling, that’s not up to me anymore. Thanks to the HVAC technology in the smart thermostat, I just leave all that alone these days. The smart thermostat now knows our patterns and adjusts accordingly. So I’ll save big once again on air conditioning this year without having to be the good cop or the bad cop.

Well, maybe not forever but more than 30 years and upward of 40 years

We’re not yet retired but we are now for sure starting that chapter. By wife and I are both 59 and we just completed construction on a custom home this past Fall. For sure, this project was one of those things that we had dreamed about since we were first married. And in fact, we spent nearly 3 years of evenings in the air conditioning planning the design. So many of our friends are planning their retirement as we are. But most of them are thinking that it’s off to the air conditioning and the sun of the south. That’s not so appealing to us as we love where we live. In fact, we both picked this region to live in because everything we have a passion for is right here. Of course, we had to upgrade the HVAC equipment in our old place and sell it before we could make this thing come true. So that meant living in an apartment for just over a year while the build was happening. That made me yearn for my own quality heating and air since the HVAC equipment in that apartment was really old and needed to be replaced. The geothermal heat pump that we had installed in our new place will likely be the last one we have to put in. Not only is it super efficient and sustainable, the geo heat pump lasts forever. Well, maybe not forever but more than 30 years and upward of 40 years. That’s pretty remarkable that the HVAC equipment will, in all likelihood, survive my wife and I. All I know is that I’m looking forward to low air conditioning costs this Summer.
