A couple months ago, while I was away from home, the temperature dropped to below freezing which was quite unusual for the area that I live in.

When temperatures hit record lows like that, there are certain things that a homeowner should do to prepare.

For example, homeowners should cover their plants to protect them from the brutal weather or bring the potted ones to an indoor space. In addition, it is recommended to keep the heat on between 65 and 68 degrees for ideal indoor comfort. Lastly, plumbers recommend that you turn on the hot and cold faucets so that they drip to prevent the pipes from freezing over. Well because I wasn’t home, none of those things listed were executed. Sadly, some of my plants were destroyed due to the weather, but I also had a busted pipe and needed emergency plumbing service. Thankfully, my neighbor Karen was able to help with the situation because I wasn’t able to fly back home in time to take care of it myself. This was my first time having a broken pipe, so I wasn’t sure who to contact. If it wasn’t for Karen letting me know that I should contact a plumber, I probably would’ve called my utility company as they are the ones I pay the water bill to. At the time, and during the panic of the situation, a plumber did not cross my mind. Anyway, Karen was able to contact a local plumbing company online that provided emergency plumbing service. In addition, Karen was able to locate my main water shut off, to stop the water from the broken pipe from causing any major damage. All in all, the plumber was able to fix the broken pipe and I was left with the clean up when I returned home.

I was told that when we wanted to put outdoor lighting on the patio and our backyard; we needed to hire a licensed electrician.

I looked at the contractor and told him I thought all electricians were licensed.

He explained that if the electrician works for a contracting company; they are licensed. There were some independent electricians who weren’t licensed. Without the license, they probably aren’t bonded and there could be a lot of mistakes that would be our responsibility to fix or sue the electrician. Once I asked him to give us the name of a licensed electrician, I should have known he would recommend that worked for his company. I wasn’t being rude, but I wanted several licensed electricians that would give me a quote for the job that needed done. The contractor gave me the name of three licensed electricians who specialized in outdoor lighting. It surprised me when all three quotes were close in price. My partner and I chose the first name that was on the list, and he was also the one who worked for our contractor. I liked the man, and he was a professional. He showed us his license to prove he was a licensed electrician, and he showed us proof that he was bonded. Neither of the other two even hinted that they were licensed or bonded. When the outdoor lighting was completed, it was nicer than we had imagined. The patio looked like a faerie garden, and there were lights along the walkway. I didn’t imagine it was going to be this beautiful when I came up with the idea.

Once I found the marketing company I wanted to work with, I asked if I could talk to their HVAC specialist. It didn’t take long to find someone who had the time to talk to me. When I once again asked if she was sure she worked in the HVAC department, she laughed. She told me she was not only an HVAC technician for ten years, but she owned the HVAC company she worked for. I asked her what she would do to make my HVAC website a working tool for bringing in more business. It didn’t take long to know I was talking to the right person and that she would help my HVAC company succeed. Within a week, I was already seeing major changes in my website, and I was getting more excited to see what she was going to do next.

With the price of oil and electricity going up, my husband and I had been discussing installing ductless HVAC into our home.

With the solar panels, we wouldn’t need to worry so much about the cost of electricity.

We knew we could generate enough solar energy to pay for half the cost. Our issue was coming up with the cost they wanted for ductless HVAC. When the HVAC technician showed up to do the inspection on our air conditioning unit, I told him I had a few questions. I wanted to know if we could put ductless HVAC in just one room and finish the rest of the house over the next two years. He didn’t understand why we couldn’t. He asked where we would like to have the ductless HVAC system installed. My husband said he was thinking about the basement. He had his work room down there, and it was really humid in the summer. We didn’t have air conditioning in the house, and there were no windows where he could install an air conditioning unit that would keep the basement cool. He was using a humidifier all the time, and he hoped a ductless HVAC system would help to cool the basement and get rid of the excess humidity. In the winter, he would sit down there and freeze while working. He couldn’t block off just one room to heat, and if the ductless HVAC would take care of the cooling and heating, we could then add more later. The HVAC technician told him he could give us an estimate for the unit and how many indoor units we needed. He would also include the installation and two years of maintenance. My husband is going to order his ductless HVAC system next month.
