It was not until I noticed my dog’s fur all over the house that I realized there was an issue with the air purification system.

Upon further inspection, I saw the unit was not even on.

My HVAC unit was working, but not the air purifier, so I never saw when it broke down. Luckily, the HVAC company promised to send its HVAC technicians within three hours. By this time, I had seen the reduced indoor comfort and hoped the HVAC professionals would help with indoor comfort. The workmen were on time for the appointment, and after running HVAC maintenance on the working unit, they checked on the other malfunction. As the local contractors did the duct cleaning and fixing the ductwork, the senior engineers assessed the air quality system. They established the issue to be a malfunctioned socket. The socket pins looked bent, so they did not transport power to the unit. I was happy because all I needed to do was buy a new socket and extension instead of an entire unit. As we moved the grand piano in, we nicked the socket and messed with the pins. The workmen said the unit had been off for several days, but I only noticed it the previous day. The central unit had air cleaning capabilities which slightly improved the air quality but not at the same level as the air cleaner. They finished by changing the air filters and taking me step by step through the process so I could attempt it in the future. I was impressed by the home services I received from the engineers and purposed to check on all the units regularly.

I recently met up with my uncle to ask for advice as I am considering starting an HVAC company. My uncle owned one of the most successful companies in the country, but he sold it to move abroad and do charity work. He told me how he built the company from the ground up. He started as a junior HVAC technician, enabling him to build a network of professionals in the same field. He worked hard and was soon promoted and given a team to help with indoor comfort. Every team member appreciated him and his knowledge of HVAC units, including air purification systems. After he got married, he started considering branching out to open his business. The thought of now having a family and people who depend on him pushed him to start creating his company. He began by vending air quality systems as homeowners would need them all year round. He then progressed and employed local contractors to help install the units. It took some time to entirely provide for his family from the business, but he eventually did. Not long ago, he employed more HVAC professionals who helped with HVAC maintenance activities, including duct cleaning, changing the air filters, and fixing ductwork to improve the air quality. By then, my uncle had gotten his first kids, twins, and the cost of living had gone up, but he could provide for his family and create employment. He encouraged me to continue and start my business. It would be a success if I followed the right processes and endeavored to provide quality home service to my customers. He explained that returning customers only come back if they get excellent service.

The pandemic was actually the push I needed to get out and do what I had always planned to do.

When we were sent home from the zone controlled HVAC of the office during the worst of the pandemic, it was the tipping point of change for me.

I hate that it took a global health crisis to change my perspective on my career. But I’m thankful nonetheless. After more than 15 years of service to the company, I was barely able to hang on to my job due to the pandemic. And I had to take a deep pay cut to just continue working remotely from the air conditioning at home. This just didn’t sit well with me and I knew that I has sort of duped myself into thinking that I was valuable to the company. When I started my career, I only wanted to be inside the commercial HVAC of an office to get experience. I wanted to hone my skills for several years in order to go out on my own in this industry. But that steady paycheck and my climb up the corporate ladder diverted those plans. It wasn’t until the pandemic that I truly saw my worth to the company. So I ended up never going back to that zone controlled HVAC of the downtown offices. Instead, I resigned and went out on my own instead. This was scary but what I wanted all along. I now have a home office where there was once a spare room. And I had the HVAC company come out to install a ductless heat pump in my new home office. I might be working from home but the quality heating and air is better than my old office.

It’s never easy when a family comes apart.

Honestly, that was the last thing I thought would ever happen to us. But life changes and people change. However, it’s hard to believe that my wife and I are now divorced and I’m starting over. We met inside the radiant heating of a dorm room where we went to college. It was just a random meeting as I was picking up some notes from a friend. But we fell in love over our senior year. Once we were out of the radiant heating of those dorm rooms, I started my career and we got married. My wife was eager to start a family so we bought a house with new residential HVAC equipment and got busy raising kids. It was what I thought to be a quite normal existence. It was work, family and faith for more than 20 years. But in retrospect, I can see that I spent far too many hours inside the commercial HVAC of the office chasing success. And that really did take a toll on my relationship with my wife. I wasn’t around all that much and she started living a more independent life as the kids got older. Once they were off to college, my wife told me that it was over for her. I was stunned but part of my subconscious was not surprised. So here I am, in a much smaller house doing renovations to a place that I will now call home. The first thing I did was to have the latest in HVAC technology installed in my new place. I love the quality heating and air of this new residential HVAC. Coming home to perfect quality heating and air doesn’t cure lonely but it sure does help.
