Your HVAC Troubleshooting Guys

There has been a really bad smell in my house lately.

It literally smells like a public toilet. Not just any public toilet either. A public toilet at a ball game or large even like that. The stink is terrible. I have looked all over the house and can’t find the source of the smell. I have cleaned under the couch, under the refrigerator, and washed all of the linens. Nothing has helped. The smell remains. A good friend of mine said that I might want to look into getting my HVAC system serviced. She said that she had a similar experience a year ago and that it turned out to be her ductwork system. She had HVAC technicians come and clean out the ductwork and service the whole HVAC system. She said they even installed a special carbon filter. The smell went away and never came back. Now she has her HVAC system serviced at least once a year. A smelly HVAC system would explain the smell in my house I suppose. It would make sense. After all, the smell is bad in every single room of the house. Now that I think of it, the smell is worse when the heater is on too. I guess I am going to have to hire an HVAC company to come out and take a look. I hope they don’t charge too much though. However, at this point, I am willing to pay just about anything to get rid of that smell. It is only getting worse and I can’t live like this.

That’s only a theory though.

A lot of people say that old folks’ houses are always too warm. That is not true for my grandparents. Their house is always super comfortable. No matter the season, the house is always perfectly warm or comfortably cool. That is why I was surprised to find the house hot and humid when I visited last yesterday. I guess I should have called before popping over because both of my grandparents were a bit frazzled when I showed up. Grandma answered the door and then yelled, “It’s only Carlos!” I was a bit taken aback until I realized that they thought I was the HVAC company that they had called to repair their HVAC system. They weren’t disappointed that I was there. They were disappointed that the HVAC company wasn’t. Thankfully, the HVAC company showed up about 20 minutes later and got to work on the HVAC system. Once the air conditioner was running again my grandfather started asking them about getting an estimate for a humidifier/dehumidifier installation. You see, he collects antique pocket watches. He has been talking about getting proper humidity control for some time now. I think he might have broken the air conditioner on purpose just so my grandmother would let him get that estimate. That’s only a theory though. Maybe the air conditioner really did just break down and he seized his opportunity. Whatever the case, my grandparents are going to be getting humidity control installed in their house next week. So I guess their house is going to be even more comfortable than usual.

We are semi retired but I have to say that I have never worked so hard in my life.

My husband plays bluegrass music.

He has his whole life. But only now are we touring the country and playing in fairs and other venues. It is a lot of work and we put a lot of miles on our RV. I’m not complaining though, not really. I always wanted to tour around this beautiful country of ours. Besides, it is better than sitting home and watching the leaves fall. I am surprised at how different the climate is from one local to another though. We might be using the heater in the RV one day and the air conditioner the next. The temperature differences drive me crazy. I once wore a wool sweater to an outdoor concert and I was hot and miserable the entire time because it was 80 degrees outside. How was I to know? The last concert was 50 degrees. As the year wraps up we always go back to our home on the west coast. There are not many concerts in the winter months. Thankfully our home has a smart thermostat so we can monitor the temperature throughout our travels. We keep the A/C on in the summer and the heater on in the winter. Without being able to change the thermostat, from any distance, we would get mold or frozen pipes. Besides, it is really nice to come home to a house that has the perfect temperature. We can do that with a smart thermostat.

I knew that my father had been fixing up an old travel trailer.

He pretty much just gutted a decades old trailer and then set it all up inside to make it the way he wanted it. He has been posting lots of pictures on social media and I kept commenting with how amazing it looked. However, he hadn’t posted in awhile and I didn’t know that the trailer renovations were complete or that he intended for the two of us to go camping when I visited in November. I thought I might be helping him with the renovations and that would be it. So I was surprised at the camping plans he shared with me as soon as he picked me up from the airport. I really didn’t want to go camping. Yes we loved it when I was a kid but I’m now pushing 40 years old and haven’t been camping in over 20 years. I don’t like being cold anymore and I don’t like roughing it. But then we got home and I saw the inside of the renovated trailer. It was completely done and looked so warm and cozy. Dad had installed a faux fireplace along one wall as well. He explained that it runs on electricity and so I wouldn’t have to chop wood. However, the faux fireplace would keep us nice and warm. I still had my reservations but I saw how much he had planned and looked forward to this trip so I acquiesced. And you know what? I was never cold or uncomfortable during our entire camping trip. That space heater fireplace thing really kept the trailer nice and warm and we had a great time.
