What You Should Ask When Hiring a Roofer

A new roof or a roof repair is a big job and a big investment for your home.

  • It is important to work with a qualified and trusted roofer who understands roofing materials, safety, and building codes.

Additionally, you’ll have warranty options that give you peace of mind that your roofing contractor stands behind their work for years to come. To hire a roofing contractor, most homeowners start with a list of two to five contractors and meet with two to three before making their final decision. You can find qualified roofers online, or get recommendations from family and friends, but these methods may not give you all the information you need to determine who is qualified. You should also ask about insurance coverage. Your roofer should carry insurance to help protect your home from accidental damage. Your roofing contractor should also be able to offer a limited warranty that may include workmanship coverage. Your roofing contractor should explain your warranty and be clear about who to call with a problem. Find out if defective shingles are replaced for the original cost or prorated replacement cost and if labor charges are included. A roofing contractor should provide an estimate that includes a description of the work to be performed, plus any work that may need to be contracted out. You should have your roofing contractor inspect your entire roof system, including the deck, attic, flashing, chimneys, soil stacks, and any other roof penetrations, in addition to checking for storm damage. Furthermore, your roofer should be familiar with and follow all manufacturer’s specifications since improper application can void your warranty.

Why Your Dishwasher Isn’t Draining

Standing water in your dishwasher after a cycle is never a good thing. Water drains normally before the door is opened. If your dishwasher won’t drain, don’t give up and start washing dishes by hand just yet. Dishwashers are among the best appliances ever invented. However, if it stops draining, you could end up with a sink full of dirty dishes or even a flooded kitchen floor. There are several things that could be wrong with your dishwasher, such as a clogged drain hose, a dirty filter basket, a broken drain valve, or a blocked air gap. Dishwasher water is removed by the drain hose. The drain of every dishwasher is covered by a filter basket. It prevents large debris from blocking the drain, but the same debris can clog both the basket and the drain. In the event that the drain valve malfunctions, the dishwasher will remain full of water after the washing cycle. The air gap prevents dirty water from backing up into the dishwasher. Your dishwasher won’t drain properly if it gets clogged. Start by running the garbage disposal. Garbage disposal drains are connected to the drain hose. You may not be able to fully empty your dishwasher if there is food stuck in the disposal. The problem may be resolved by clearing the disposal. Ensure that any blockages are removed. You will not be able to drain your dishwasher if there is a clog anywhere in it. Make sure the filter basket isn’t full of food particles by pulling it out. Make sure the air gap is not blocked. Remove any missed debris by wiping the interior and cleaning the filter. Check the drain hose. Check to see if it’s in good condition. It should be free of kinks and have a tight seal. Use a wire hanger to remove or loosen clogs. Lastly, clean the drain valve. You can access it by removing the kick plate under the dishwasher.

I was surprised with the silent cooling unit in the cabin

I love my life and job, but it can sometimes be draining.

Working long hours isn’t all that bad.

But, I have also learned to take a break. One time, when I was starting my career, I worked for 2 years without taking a break. The rewards were a promotion at work and a breakdown. The promotion meant I was the youngest person in the company to get a new position, but this came at a cost. I ended up in the hospital, and the doctor demanded I take a month off to relax. He recommended going away to some cabin away from technology and just chilling. That’s what I did, and I do that every year. Early this year, I went away to this amazing location with simple cabins. The rental office stated all the cabins were perfect accommodation with air conditioning. Since this area was getting warmer, I had to ensure that air conditioning was available in the cabin I booked. It took 6 hours to drive to the location. The key to the cabin was at the rental office; once I had it, I drove a few meters to it. Upon opening the door, the space looked amazing, but something was off. It seemed the AC unit wasn’t working because the cabin was dead silent. AC units emit a humming noise when working to cool a space. But, this cabin was so silent that I had to phone the rental office. A caretaker came to inspect, and after ascertaining the faulty AC, I was moved to another cabin with a working air conditioner.

June’s AC was emitting a concerning smell

June left for her summer vacation on a Monday morning.

She was so happy to have time to get away and just relax finally.

As many people seek the hot weather in summer, June travels north where there are cooler temperatures. There is this rental place that has amazing offers on cabins in remote but beautiful spaces. June spent 3 weeks there relaxing and returned home in the middle of summer. The first thing she did when she got home turned her AC from vacation mode to cool her home. After some time, June began to notice the house was smelling musty. She had never encountered such a weird smell and was wondering about the cause of this issue. It later dawned on June that the musty smell filling her home was because of the AC unit. The smell had been there when she walked into her house, but it worsened after changing the thermostat settings. June knew she had to phone the AC business downtown to come and tackle this issue. Unfortunately, it was late, and she had to wait until the following morning for an AC worker to come by. The guy got to work tracing the source of the musty AC smell. He informed June that her drain pan was full and was the cause of the musty smell. If she had scheduled an AC maintenance before summer, an AC expert would have drained the pan. Still, it wasn’t too late to do so, and the guy also took care of some algae clogging part of the drain line. The AC worker also spoke to June about different service contracts for heating and cooling units.
