I’m really not much of a cocktail party sort of person.

It’s not so much a social anxiety thing but it’s not too far off either. But the truth is, I’m normally glad I went after my wife drags me to a friends for dinner or a cocktail party. This past one, I fell in love with some new HVAC technology that just changed my life. The friends that were hosting the party are my wife’s buddies from work. It’s a married couple who not only share the quality heating and air of home but also the zone controlled HVAC of the office. I’m not sure that my wife and I could pull that off. Perhaps we could but I’m not sure I want to find out. So I really didn’t know these folks at all and it was the first time to visit their home. Well, when I’m uncomfortable, I tend to turn the conversation back to other people. This is a great way for me to function at a party. Most people just love to talk about themselves. I don’t. That’s when I always feel like I could use a whole lot more air conditioning because I start to sweat and get nervous. But this house, I was just stunned by how utterly perfect the quality heating and air was in that place. Once I got the hosts alone, the showed me the whole heating and cooling system. They had the very latest in HVAC technology which included zone controlled HVAC throughout the house and a smart thermostat. It wasn’t a month after that party before the HVAC professionals were installing the same in my house.

I’m not for sure that my buddy is keeping the thermostat cranked when it’s poker night but I have my suspicions. There is a group of us who play poker about once a month, sometimes twice. It’s the same crew for more than a decade now. Two women and one of the men in the group share the zone controlled HVAC of the office with me. We work in different departments but the same office and company. The other guys are buddies I’ve had since I was a kid. I grew up down here with all the air conditioning the south is known for. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. I tried my hand at two northern winters. Not sure there is enough gas furnace power to have kept me truly warm. I was cold all the time and we had state of the art residential HVAC in that place. I hurried right back to where I am now. So these games rotate houses. This one guy’s house is hotter than most in the summer. And I keep my thermostat at 82 degrees during the peak heating hours of the day in the summer. My suspicions are that he does this to make us all less comfortable while playing poker. I’ve recently been to his house for a small dinner party. That place was the picture of HVAC cooling and so wonderfully comfortable. So next time poker is at his house, I’m checking the thermostat and calling him out. Smart thermostat or not, I think I know what this cat is up to with the air conditioning when it’s poker night.

It’s not that I actually live for vacation but it’s for sure a big highlight of my year.

I’m now far enough along in my career that I get a lot of vacation time.

So I try to take long weekends and get out of the quality heating and air of the house throughout the year. But at the end of each summer, we always leave that quality heating and air together for two full weeks. Since the kids were little, we’ve been going to the beach for the last weeks before school starts. The oldest is now in college and the other two aren’t far behind. I was sort of afraid that once the kids were that age, they’d leave the old man back in the room with the air conditioning and TV. I know that’s what I did with my old man. But I guess I’m a bit more fun to be around than my dad because my kids actually hang out with me. The best part of our trips these days is the vacation rental. Being able to rent a small house or condo is just the way to go these days. Plus, the one we’ve been getting for the past couple of years has the best HVAC cooling ever. Actually, the entire house has zone controlled HVAC which is awesome. So I have a thermostat in the bedroom. My poor wife has to wear serious pajamas to bed because I crank down the air conditioning after all day in the sun and ocean. Great vacation with great kids in the best HVAC cooling I’ve ever experienced is a great vacation from my point of view.

Mostly, I was outside of the air conditioning looking after pools and recreational offerings for the guests. I’m very much an outdoor person and don’t think I could ever work in the zone controlled HVAC of an office environment. Honestly, I could hardly stand being inside the air conditioning of the hotel or resort each day. I made the meetings inside the air conditioning of the hotel or resort but the rest of the time, I was outside. Naturally, I am also into camping. And my wife’s idea of camping is an interstate hotel where you can see the HVAC equipment sticking through the wall of each room. So it has taken me the better part of a decade to get her to agree to go on a camping trip. She’s actually going to walk away from the quality heating and air of our house to sleep outside for five whole days. This is unprecedented really. I don’t think she’s ever taken any vacation in her entire life that didn’t come with some great heating and cooling comfort. Since we are hiking and camping in the mountains to watch the fall colors, I’ve had to make a couple of compromises. First, we are staying in tent sites that have access to restrooms and showers. Second, we are taking a small space heater with us so my wife and sit it in front of her on the cool mornings before she gets out of her sleeping bag.
