I was even more excited when I heard about the promotion

Ever since my girlfriend told me that she is pregnant, I have been nervous and excited. I don’t have any children yet and this will be my first one. I am excited for my girlfriend and I to go through the process together, but it would be a lot easier for the two of us if we had a little bit more money. I talked to my boss a couple of times about a raise and a promotion. I’ve been working at the heating and AC repair and installation business for the past 2 years. My boss didn’t act like he was listening, so I honestly didn’t think he was going to give me a raise or a promotion. When I got my paycheck on Friday, I saw a raise. My pay went up $2 each hour. It made a pretty big difference on my paycheck. I immediately called my boss when I saw the raise and that’s when he told me about the promotion. I was even more excited when I heard about the promotion. I have a lot more responsibility and I will have to work slightly different hours at the Heating and AC company, but the extra money is going to be so helpful when my girlfriend finally has the baby. Now that I have a promotion, I might even think about buying a ring so I can propose. I want to be able to offer my girlfriend something that says I am thinking about our future, especially if I expect her to say yes.

Central heating and air conditioning has changed our lives in many ways.

No longer are we subject to the extreme temperatures that nature can throw at us.

We have climate controlled spaces to escape freezing cold or oppressive heat. The very first air conditioner unit was used by a publishing company in New York in 1902. The high humidity in the summer made it necessary to have an air conditioner, because the ink would not dry properly otherwise. Later on in the 1930s, air conditioning was not yet widespread at all. However, believe it or not, movie theaters were one of the first businesses to have air conditioners. It makes a certain kind of sense. Combining a chance to beat the heat with a good movie for entertainment was a powerful incentive, and that is why we now have the phrase “summer blockbuster”. Summer break for school was even supposedly implemented because the excessive heat and humidity in the summer was simply too much to reasonably expect kids to attend school during such times in certain parts of the country. I sure was glad for the air conditioner in the summer when I went to school! Great air conditioner was one of the reasons it was so easy for me to fall asleep in history class! Anyway, I think we should all be grateful for the invention of modern central heating and air conditioning. I’m pretty sure no one ever wants to go back to a time when we were at the mercy of the elements!

 

Reflecting on the evolution of climate control

I never used to mind working in an office with other people. Being around coworkers is not the problem for me. I actually enjoy the close proximity of other people who are working towards the same goal, and collaborating with them in person is actually far more productive and effective, in my opinion. That being said, there is actually a very good reason why during the COVID-19 pandemic, I actually really enjoyed not having to work in an office space. It wasn’t because I was particularly worried about catching COVID. It was because we had recently moved to a new building where I could tell that the HVAC system was not properly sized for the building. On top of this, whoever controlled the thermostat in this new building set the temperature way too low. The problem was, the HVAC system was so powerful that it would reach the desired temperature super quick and then shut off. If you are not aware, the problem with this is that air conditioners are supposed to pull the moisture out of the air in addition to keeping the room cool. Do you see where this is going? Not only was it freezing in our office, but it was a damp kind of freezing! It was just an awful feeling and wearing extra layers just wasn’t cutting it for me. That’s why I was so happy when I was allowed to work at home where I could set the thermostat to the temperature I wanted and rely on my HVAC system to be properly sized to suck out all that humid air!

My wife is a very light sleeper. There always seems to be something or another that is keeping her from getting a good night’s rest whether it’s because of back pain, headaches, or simply not being able to turn her brain off. I try to give her massages and help her feel at ease before bed. I feel like I need to be very careful not to wake her up. I tend to sleep like a rock, though. Thankfully, we have found ways to help her get the best night’s rest that she can. She enjoys a very low temperature on the thermostat, just like I do. We will even have fans blowing in the room to circulate air and be a means of white noise to block out any distracting sounds. This is important, because the homes in our neighborhood are very close together and everything from the dog barking next door to the train close to our house that comes by the same time every night will make it difficult for her to sleep. Keeping the room ice cold from the powerful A/C combined with having thick warm blankets gives us both a sense of comfort that makes it much easier to sleep well. That is why I am very careful to ensure that our air conditioner is always running at peak performance. I am sure to change the air filters regularly. I also signed up for scheduled biannual maintenance for the air conditioner to ensure that any necessary cleaning or repairs are performed by an HVAC technician. It’s a struggle to help my wife to sleep as well as she possibly can, but I am grateful that we at least have the benefit of good air conditioning.
