I had to spend a couple of nights in a hotel last month and I was very unhappy with the accommodations. I don’t usually like to complain about much, but this hotel was absolutely terrible. It had good reviews online, which is a complete and total surprise. The front desk clerk was rude and obnoxious. He didn’t seem happy to help me when I requested a first floor room and ended up with a third-floor room. I would have been much happier if the guy had been friendly. When I called the front desk to complain about the AC, I could hear the sarcasm in the guy’s voice. He asked me if I wanted to complain about anything else. I hung up the phone and went right down to the front desk. I was ready to give that guy a piece of my mind. When I got to the lobby, the guy was talking to his manager. He was getting yelled at. When I saw the boss talking to the guy, I knew why he was giving me a hard time. Instead of being a jerk, I decided to be as nice as possible to the clerk. I told the guy that the hotel AC was not very cold. I did not believe the AC was working properly. He offered to switch me to a different room and even said he would double check on the AC before making the final preparations to move me to a different room. The desk clerk was much nicer the second time that I spoke with him. Maybe I caught the guy at a bad time earlier that day.

My boss sent me out to the country on Monday to handle a furnace installation job. I arrived at the customer’s address shortly before the appointment time of 10 am. I had all of the Machinery necessary to complete the job and the customer was expecting me to arrive at 10 am. I waited in the driveway for a while after I knocked on the door and no one answered. I was hopeful that someone would eventually come outside, but that did not happen. I called my boss to ask what he wanted me to do next. The guy told me to come back to the shop if no one was home. I headed back to the shop and I arrived just as my boss was hanging up the phone from a call. He told me that the woman from the furnace installation job called. She was wondering where we were. She tried to tell my boss that I never went to the address. I told my boss that was absolutely crazy. He started to ask me a bunch of questions and it felt like he didn’t believe the fact that I was there. I didn’t have any reason not to tell the truth. I wasn’t planning to go down without a fight. I told my boss that I was going to go home for the day and he could call me later if he wanted me to come to work the next day. There are at least a dozen or more HVAC service providers in the area and I have a ton of experience. I can literally work anywhere that I want and that means not putting up with someone that wants to question my morals.

There really aren’t a lot of things that scare me.

I’ve seen a lot of things and I’ve done a lot of things too. Nothing surprises me and nothing makes me scared. Still, my resolve was tested last weekend. My best friend and I started an HVAC repair company together. We mostly deal with residential clients, although we have a couple of commercial customers as well. One of our residential customers called a week after we installed a brand new air conditioner. The lady was hearing sounds coming from the ductwork. I thought it was strange, especially since we had recently been to her place. We did not see any evidence of problems in the ductwork when we evaluated the system. I went to the address and the woman told me that the sounds were now coming from the basement. I got out my flashlight and shined it towards the bottom of the stairs. I saw a rat run across the bottom of the basement stairs. The rat was clearly the largest rat I have ever seen in my life. It startled me and made me think twice about going into the basement. I told the woman that we probably needed to contact an exterminator after I saw the rats. She told me that she didn’t have any rats in her house for sure. I absolutely disagreed and refused to go any further until I had help with the job. I didn’t even charge the lady until after the exterminator visited.

When I was 9 years old, I got bit by a dog.

• The dog jumped a fence from a yard and started mauling my arms and legs.

The dangerous dog attacked without any provocation from me at all. I went to the emergency room and had several stitches in my arm and leg. I was scared to death of dogs after that bite. No one could blame me for having dread and fear. A dog picked me up and wanted to chew on my body like I was a toy. I had every reason to feel upset and afraid. When I decided to become an HVAC repair technician, I knew I was going to run into opportunities where I would have to deal with a dog or two. I’ve done my absolute best to remain composed and calm when I do have to encounter a dog. I recently had an experience that shook me for days. I went to an apartment where a customer was not home at the time. The maintenance supervisor assured me that the resident did not have a dog. When I opened the front door, I did not expect a dog to greet me on the other side. I heard the dogs start barking and I immediately closed the door. The dog started jumping and barking and growling. I could hear the dog on the other side of the wall and there was no way I was going inside of that building after that. I contacted the maintenance supervisor and told the guy that I could not complete the HVAC repair.
