When we initially moved into our house, we loved everything about it, and we did not change a thing.

When we moved in, the furnace/heater installation was just two years old. We did only subscribe to an annual HVAC service plan to keep it running smoothly and optimally. The electric heating system was one of the best in the heating industry and we never had any complaints other than an occasional heating repair. We also had to replace the furnace filter every two/three months because we had pets. The two-bedroomed house was enough for me, my partner, and our cats Hulk and Tinker, our dog. We had a huge yard, enough for them to run around. We also had several trees that Olly enjoyed climbing. All these changed when we discovered that we were expecting a baby girl. We used it as a guest room on the other side of the house, which works just fine, but it would not do as a nursery. So we decided to add two new bedrooms if we ever had another child. One would be a master ensuite for us and the other a nursery that is better placed. The heater was not big enough to serve the extra rooms, so we consulted a heating dealership to discuss our options for heat and AC products for the extra add-ons. We had the idea of getting an additional boiler, but after talking to the HVAC tech, we opted for heated floors that a wireless thermostat would regulate. Coupled with annual heating maintenance, we would not have to worry about heating for a long time. A month before the baby was born, we were working on the interior of the house.

The next work assignment required my colleague and me to visit a small town for our research.

Since we would be there for eight days, the company had booked us into what my boss referred to as The Hamptons.

The town was in a cold region, and the first thing I did was call the B&B to ask about their furnace/heater installation. The state and history of the heat and AC products from the reviews would either break or make the deal, but I preferred to call the owner first before reading the comments to see if they were honest about the situation. The man I talked to on the phone told me they had a good electric heating system. He assured me that he had the paperwork for their HVAC service plan and receipts from recent heater maintenance. He even went ahead to give me the heating dealership’s contacts if I needed to corroborate what he was saying. He sounded like an honest man, and there was no need for all that. The only knowledge I had about heaters was from friends since my house was fitted with heated floors, although I did have a boiler for my hot water needs. The heating industry, especially where homes are concerned, was all new to me because I grew up where HVACs were not common since they were rarely necessary. Here, I learned the importance of HVAC tech when it came to heating repair and servicing. I remember when my friend told me that I needed to check my furnace filter, I asked him if I could do that from the wireless thermostat. To date, it remains one of the most embarrassing situations.

One day, Josh came and told me that he had a surprise for me.

The next few days, he was constantly on the phone with what I could assume was the heating dealership. He had also been researching the heating industry and repeatedly asked which heat and AC product I liked best if I had to choose all over again. The electric heating system we had was barely five years old. So I failed to understand his sudden interest in heaters. I asked him if he had noticed any problem with the boiler after the heater maintenance two months before. When he said that there was no issue, I started becoming suspicious. He had been acting strange, and when I asked what was going on, he would give me the most stupid reasons, the last being that he was trying to find the best furnace filter that we would use moving forward. I eventually gave up when I told him a person who claimed to be an HVAC tech had called, and he said it was for a heating repair at his friend’s house. Our weekend vacation was finally here. When we finally got there, I was speechless. An old run-down house that overlooked a stream he had repurchased some years ago was completely renovated, and I could see most of the things I had suggested when we talked about remodeling it. It had heated floors and a wireless thermostat. He finally told me what had been going on. The contractor who called confirmed that they were done with the furnace/heater installation and wanted to finalize details of the HVAC service plan. He considered all the little details we had both agreed on, back when we had no idea when we would get money for the renovation.

Claire had originally turned Pam down flat when she explained the wardrobe for the show; she’d never worn less than a one-piece swimsuit in public, so she certainly didn’t intend to lose her inhibitions in front of a room full of strange men.

The following day she received news that her mother’s heater would need to be replaced.

There was no way she could afford the new furnace/heater installation and her mother’s medicine; thus, she ended up with a second job that she would have never imagined in a lifetime. Running her mother’s house and her apartment was taking a toll on her, and she could barely get by with just her day job. Some years back, they had a scheduled HVAC service plan with the local heating dealership, but that had long been forgotten when her mother fell ill, and all her late father’s insurance money got depleted. She changed the furnace filter, but that barely qualifies as heater maintenance. With the new job that Pam had given her, she could easily afford to pay the HVAC tech for any heating repair needed and occasionally service the electric heating system. She also had her apartment to take care of. Her heated floors did not warm the house perfectly, but the same could not be said about the boiler for all her hot water needs. The heating industry was forever enticing her with new heat and AC products such as the wireless thermostat, but her account balance would not allow for such indulgence. For now, all she could do was attend to the most important things, her mother’s medication topping the list.
