I was really upset when my air conditioning unit died.

• It was only a year old, and there was no reason why the air conditioning unit should have died.

I was pacing the house, waiting for the HVAC technician to arrive. I was going to show him my warranty and make sure he followed the warranty and repaired the air conditioning unit for free, or got me a new one. I wanted to make sure there were no recalls on the air conditioning, that would affect the way it worked. A part of me knew I was being unreasonable, but I wasn’t going to let him pull any wool over my eyes. I was going into this AC repair with my eyes wide open, and I was going to make sure he knew I was going to be taken. When the HVAC technician arrived, he asked what had happened to the air conditioning unit and I told him. I told him about the warranty and how old the air conditioning unit was. I also told him I had bought a maintenance agreement when they installed the air conditioning unit. He told me he understood and he already had all the information in his pocket he had with him. He went outside and looked at the air conditioning. He came back inside with a puzzled look on his face. He went over to the thermostat to check it out. He asked me when I had last changed the batteries in the thermostat. I started to tell him I change them on January 1st every year. That’s when I remembered I had gone home to visit my parents this past Christmas. I had forgotten to change the batteries. My thermostat batteries died, along with the air conditioning.

I thought I had all the answers even before the HVAC technician showed up at the house.

I was sure he was going to look at the air conditioning unit and tell us it needed to be replaced. I was going to tell him to install a new HVAC system in the house, instead of just replacing the air conditioning. I didn’t want a central HVAC. I wanted something that would be less work and cleaner to run. I was going to have him order and install ductless HVAC for my home. The morning the HVAC technician was supposed to arrive, I was up early, and waiting for him. I knew he had a three-hour window, but my appointment was for 8 AM. How much later could he be so early in the morning? He didn’t arrive until almost 10 AM, which had me slightly upset. He went right to work on the air conditioning, and I was waiting for him to tell me the AC unit couldn’t be fixed. Instead, he told me it was just a matter of putting some coolant in the air conditioning unit, and it would be fine. I was angry. I asked him what kind of HVAC technician he was so that he couldn’t tell me the air conditioning unit was broken so I could get a new HVAC system? He told me if I wanted a new HVAC system that was fine, but he wasn’t going to lie and tell me the AC unit wasn’t fixable. I felt stupid after talking to the HVAC technician, because he thought I wanted him to forget about being an HVAC tech and just tell me what I wanted to hear.

I didn’t want the contractor to hire the company we used for our HVAC system.

We did a lot of research before hiring the contractor who was going to build our house.

We did research on which plumbing company to use, and who would do the electrical work. I didn’t know why he thought we would just allow him to bring someone in from the HVAC company on his word alone. He was angry at us for not allowing his people to do the plumbing and electrical work, so why would he think we would allow him to use ‘his guys’ for the HVAC. We called several HVAC contractors and had four quotes before considering hiring anyone to do our HVAC system. I thought the contractor was going to quit when I told him we found the HVAC company we wanted. They gave us an excellent quote for the HVAC system and gave us several options. They were able to look up our house plans on a website, which gave them all the information they needed on what size HVAC system we would potentially need, and we hired them. The contractor told us we were carrying this whole thing too far. We hired him to do a job, and we agreed we had. We wanted him to build us the house of our dreams, but it was just the house. Any other contractor needed would be up to us to hire, like we hired him. He huffed and puffed and tried to tell us we were asking for too much, but after an hour, he was calling us. He said the HVAC contractor wanted to meet us at the house.

We had been married for five years now, and he still didn’t know what I did for a living

My husband and I were talking about what kind of HVAC system we wanted in our new home. When I started telling him the do’s and don’ts of some of the HVAC systems, he was impressed. I was giving him the lowdown on the ductless HVAC system, the geothermal, and the traditional HVAC system. I told him about the different types of ductwork they now offered, so you didn’t have the tin ductwork that would slice a man’s head off if he was tall enough. He asked me where I got all of my knowledge. I told him I was reading all about it on the local HVAC company’s website. He wanted to see the website, and I pulled it up for him. It amazed him how much information they had on the website. There was FAQs section that helped teach people how to diagnose their HVAC problem. There was one section that was just for homeowners and showed you how to clean your own HVAC system, and even how to change an air filter. He told me if he were an HVAC company owner, he would want to know who created the website for them. The HVAC company had a moneymaker on that website. We had been married for five years now, and he still didn’t know what I did for a living. I told him I created a website for my dad’s HVAC company, and it never struck him that this was my dad’s HVAC website. I told him the person who created the HVAC company website had to be a genius and he agreed with me.
