What should you do if your furnace stops working?

I understand why you might want to use a space heater or turn on your oven, but that is extremely dangerous

As an HVAC technician, people are always wondering what they should do if their furnace stops working, and I am glad that they ask an HVAC technician. It is always very stressful if your furnace stops working. When a central air conditioner stops working, it might be inconvenient, but that is probably the worst that is going to happen. You can definitely live without a central air conditioner, but you might be a little warm without a central air conditioner. However, a furnace is a completely different story. You could literally die without a furnace, and your house can go through a ton of issues if you do not have a furnace. Still, when most people have trouble with their furnace, they have no idea what they are supposed to do. First of all, you should call an HVAC technician. I know that this seems simple, but there are a lot of bad things that can happen to your house if it does not have heat. For instance, if the water pipes under your house drop below freezing, they could freeze and burst, costing you a ton of money in plumbing repairs. The sooner that you call the HVAC technician means the sooner that your furnace is fixed. Also, you should not try to supplement heat. I understand why you might want to use a space heater or turn on your oven, but that is extremely dangerous. You don’t want your house to burn down while you are waiting for the furnace to get repaired. Instead, it would be better to stay with a friend for a few hours while you are waiting for the furnace to be repaired.
