I couldn’t believe how much dirt and other stuff HVAC technicians find when they are cleaning ductwork.

I thought it would just be a lot of dust and debris, but I was wrong.

My husband had never worked with ductwork cleaning, but the HVAC company’s owner asked him to be the lead HVAC technician last week. It didn’t thrill my husband to do the job, but it was better than walking into someone’s house and getting chased by dogs or snakes, which had already happened to him. When he showed up at the house with the crew of ductwork cleaners, he was prepared to watch the men clean the ductwork and clean the dirt they created. It surprised him when there was no mess, and the crew needed little supervision. They knew exactly what they were doing. It surprised him even more when he heard the crew laughing. He walked over, and found them going through a wad of dirty money. Someone had dropped a wallet full of money in the ductwork, and they were wondering if the owner even knew it was lost. My husband took the wallet and said thank you, but the crew only laughed. He went inside and asked if the family was missing anything. The woman said there was nothing missing that she was aware of, unless he found a missing wallet her husband lost a couple of months earlier. He gave the woman the wallet and said the HVAC ductwork cleaners found it when it was sucked out of the ductwork. Her daughter looked at the wallet and tried to grab it. Her daddy had said mommy could make money disappear, and she hid the wallet in the ductwork so it wouldn’t disappear.

I had a list of everything I wanted done before spring.

I had cleaning the air ducts at the top of the list, because of all the dust we had in the house.

I wanted to clean the air ducts and then have the HVAC company come to the house and clean the ductwork. I was sure if we had the ductwork clean, we would have less dust in the house. When I called the HVAC company, they told me they wouldn’t have an opening for ductwork cleaning for almost a week. I took the first opening they had, thanked the dispatcher, and hung up. I was okay waiting for a week to get the HVAC technician to the house. I wanted to make sure I had all the other spring cleaning finished before the HVAC technician arrived. I started working in the attic, and then I went to the basement. I had all the air ducts cleaned, and I had cleaned the air vent covers. When the HVAC technician arrived, he had a crew with them. I could just imagine how much dirt they were going to track into my house, but I was wrong. Not only were the HVAC technician professional, but they were also respectful of my home. They all put on booties, and if they made a mess, they cleaned it up before they left. When they were done with the cleanup, the lead HVAC technician came into the kitchen to let me know the job was done. He showed me the work order and said they found no problem with the ductwork. It was cleaned and sanitized and the ductwork shouldn’t need cleaned for another two or three years.

It was seventy outside today, but the furnace was running.

I couldn’t figure out why the furnace was running with it being so warm outside. I looked at the thermostat and saw I had set it at sixty-eight. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do until my daughter came in and said she had called the HVAC company. When she got home from school, the furnace was running, and it was eighty in the house. She remembered I had told her to never call hesitate to call the HVAC company or the fire company. She walked in and realized how hot it was and called the HVAC company. An hour later, the HVAC technician walked in. He asked where the fans were, and said he could use some cooler air, and then he laughed. I wasn’t in a good mood, but my daughter laughed. She showed him where the furnace was located and flirted with him the entire time he was there. When he left, he asked if we wanted him to turn the furnace off for the season. I was worried it may be too early to turn off the furnace and told him to leave it running. I was glad I made that choice. Three days later, the temperatures dropped, and we had a snowstorm that dropped over a foot of snow on our area, and the temperatures stayed below freezing for more than a week. My daughter was laughing when she saw the snow. She said she knew I was a smart mom, but she never realized I was also a weather forecaster.

Most people have a regular furnace, but our family has a boiler.

I know many people who have boilers.

Boilers are less work because they require very little maintenance. A boiler will last forty to fifty years, where a regular furnace will only last about twenty. Our boiler was almost forty-five years old, and I was sure it would soon need to be replaced, but I didn’t think it would break as quickly as it did. I got up in the morning to water that was so hot it was boiling. I couldn’t put enough cold water into the mix to get into the shower. I turned off the water and burned my hand. I called the HVAC company and told them my boiler was overworking and my water was boiling. He said he would send someone to the house. When the HVAC technician arrived, he went over the boiler. He said the thermostat was stuck, but he wasn’t sure he had a thermostat to fit the boiler, since it was so old. He would need to go back to the HVAC company and check for a similar thermostat, or he may need to order one. Two hours later, the HVAC technician called and said they didn’t have a thermostat for the boiler, and he would need to order one. It was going to take at lest three days to get the thermostat for the boiler. I was hoping I would soon need a new boiler, but I didn’t want it to happen this way. The HVAC technician was going to order a new thermostat, but I was going to go without hot water while waiting for the boiler to be repaired.
