I wanted to move to another area of the city where they had just built a new apartment building. The rental of the apartments was less than I was currently paying, and it had a pool in the basement. It was closer to where I worked, and closer to my family. I asked my mom if she would go look at the apartments with me. Later that week, I picked her up, and we headed to the apartment building. It wasn’t pretty from the outside, but it was beautiful inside. The apartment they were showcasing, was huge. There were two bedrooms with their own bathrooms, and a powder room for guests. It had a washer, dryer, and dishwasher. The kitchen was large and modern and there was plenty of room for my friends and I to get together, or for me to entertain family. The only thing I was concerned with was the heating. I asked where the furnace was and who paid for heat and air conditioning. She showed me around, but didn’t answer about the furnace. She asked what my ideal temperature was, and I told her. She pulled out her computer and programmed the temperature in. She said they had an integrated HVAC system. All they had to do was program in the temperature I liked, and my apartment would always be that warm, or cool. The only rooms with their own HVAC system, was the bathrooms. I could set the temperature when I turned on the ventilation system. If there was ever a problem, they had an HVAC technician in the building, twenty-four hours a day. I signed a contract and moved in two months later.

Our friend told us he was an excellent HVAC technician, and he wasn’t hiring anyone who didn’t have the same skills and mindset that he had. That was good to hear, but I wasn’t ready to change companies. I really liked the people we worked with. He said that he thought since we were such good friends, we would want to help him out with his new HVAC company. I told him to give us some business cards, and we would hand them out, but I wasn’t going to change for him. I loved him and his family and they were our best friends, but I didn’t want to change HVAC companies. He walked out and didn’t even say goodbye. It was an excellent HVAC system, but it wasn’t what we wanted. He told us how energy efficient it would be. He said it would cost less to run and we would have excellent heating and air conditioning. For the first time in years, we would have near perfect HVAC. I trusted people and thought they always spoke the truth. I wish I was as distrusting as my wife. We would have sat down after the HVAC technician left and discussed what he had been telling us. We would have gone over the specs and been able to pick holes through his statement, but I insisted we buy the HVAC system. She walked away while rolling her eyes, and I signed the contract. She refused to sign, and the next morning, she called the HVAC company. She wanted to know if we had three days to rescind on the contract. She had read about the HVAC system the technician was pushing on us, and it was nothing we wanted. The owner of the HVAC company came to the house and went over our choice and what we had wanted and told the HVAC technician we wanted. He agreed, it wasn’t the right HVAC system for the house. He cancelled the contract and showed us HVAC systems that would match what we wanted and needed. He was going to talk to the HVAC technician who was at the house, the previous night.

Not only did he say our HVAC system was in good condition, but it was only ten years old. We could have another five or ten years of good HVAC with no problems. Our problem was with the ductwork. The ductwork was rusting and crumbling, and we needed to have it replaced. I asked what we were looking at, price wise. He told me he would need to get an HVAC contractor to the house to figure out how many feet of ductwork we needed. He could measure it up, inspect everything that is visible, and give us an estimate of the cost. He didn’t hold back when he said it was going to be expensive. However, there is flexpipe that is less expensive, and it is safer than the old metal ductwork. There were no sharp edges to bump into and get hurt on. I didn’t want to pay for ductwork, but I had no choice. My wife set up the appointment for the HVAC contractor, and all we could do is wait. I was online looking to see what a new ductwork system would cost. I couldn’t believe how much it would cost if we needed the entire ductwork system, even if we went with flexpipe. I hoped we got good news from the HVAC contractor, because I was already in panic mode. Wishes and hopes weren’t on our side when the HVAC contractor arrived. He said the damage went beyond the ductwork that was visible.
