My uncle was almost ninety and still living alone in his home.

Last week, he invited me over for lunch and to have a chat.

He told me I was the only living relative he had that he could stand to talk to. I had to laugh at that, but he was serious. He said we were a lot alike, except for the fact I had a fiance and he had never even had a girlfriend. He asked if I would put an HVAC system into his house this year? I was an HVAC technician, and that was a simple request to handle for him. He told me that if I installed a good HVAC system, he would put the house in my name, and I would have a home for my family when my fiance and I got married. I wasn’t sure if he was offering to sell me the house, or give it to me. He looked at me, and then he said the house was mine when he passed. He asked that he be allowed to live here until he passed. I couldn’t imagine my uncle living anywhere else, but I also didn’t know why he insisted on having a new HVAC system installed. He said his HVAC system was almost thirty years old, and it needed a lot of upgrades. There was new ductwork to be installed, and the new HVAC equipment. He had read a lot about ductless HVAC, and that was what he wanted installed. The day I started installing the ductless HVAC system, my uncle went to the lawyer and signed the house over to me. He chuckled and reminded me I was now responsible for the cost of the new HVAC system.

I didn’t like it when people made rash decisions.

I thought they should always come up with different scenarios and alternatives that could change the course of their life, or make it easier.

Whenever I had a student come into my office and tell me they knew exactly what they wanted to do after graduation, I would ask them if they can think of something else they would rather do? I wasn’t trying to dissuade them from their mission, but to make sure they were choosing the right path. One young woman came into my office and told me she was going to go to work with her father after graduation. I asked her what line of work her father was in and she told me he owned the local HVAC company. I thought this was admirable, but I didn’t want her to tie herself down right out of high school. I asked if she could think of something else she would rather do? She got upset with me, thinking I didn’t think it was right for a woman to be an HVAC technician. I tried to explain that she could go to college for engineering and considering building a better and more environmentally friendly HVAC system. She sat back down and said she hadn’t thought about that. She apologized and told me her mother was always telling that being an HVAC technician wasn’t a woman’s job. I believed a woman could do anything a man could do; within reason. I just wanted her to know she could be involved in HVAC and still do something good for the environment.

I don’t know where some people get their ideas, but many of them make little sense. My brother-in-law woke up one morning and told his wife he was going to own an HVAC company. If he had been an HVAC technician, this may have made some sense, but he wasn’t. He was an insurance salesperson. He said he had read where HVAC company owners were making seven figures annually and he wanted to get on the gravy train. He had had expectations of finding a partner and opening a local HVAC company and eventually going national. I wasn’t sure where he was going to get the money or the business sense to open an HVAC company, but my sister had stars in her eyes. She told me that by the end of the decade, they could be millionaires and she would never need to work again. I’m sure she saw the look of skepticism I wore, but she was ignoring me. For two weeks, she talked nonstop about everything she had to do so they could open an HVAC company. She had lists of inventory they had to buy, and lists of things they needed for the bank and other people. One afternoon, I asked her what her husband was doing to prepare for ownership of an HVAC company. She told me he wrote the list of things she had to do. It suddenly dawned on her she was doing all the work. He was coming home from the insurance company and double checking that she was doing all the legwork and then relaxing while she still took care of him.

There are some monks who live a very quiet and peaceful life, and then you have some people who are so busy they hardly have time to think.

I like to do a blend of both and have periods of business followed by times of relaxation and quiet.

I have the luxury of this because I have no kids and not a lot of toys to take care of. The only downer lately is that I blew a bunch of money that would have made it a lot easier for me to get by. My dad was a heating supplier and made a good amount of money doing HVAC sales and just gave us all $100K each from his will. I got the bright idea to drop it into cryptos, after just losing over ten grand on them, and then I lost all of it too like a fool. He worked so hard to make that money with all of the air conditioning and furnace repairs, and then I turned around and threw it all away. It is basically like a gambling addiction and if I get more money down the road I am going to just drop it in the bank. The local business where I work was asking me before I blew it if I wanted to invest it in their HVAC company, which I should have done, but no I was impatient and stupid and threw it all into something that I was sure was going to explode. Oh well, I guess there is something to learn from this but I don’t see it yet.
