There were no words that could prepare me.

When I left for work, I knew we were having torrential downpour.

  • My desk is by the windows, so I knew the rain had not lessened up at all throughout the day.

When I left work, I knew ‌I was driving through some pretty deep puddles. Even with knowing all of this, it did not prepare me for what was about to greet me. There were no words that could have prepared me. I had lived in my house for almost 5 years, and we had never had this much rain during that time. When I parked my car in front of the house, I was shocked. The water was so high that it was covering the air conditioning unit and nearly coming into the main floor of the house. The river was overflowing, and I felt like I was on a houseboat instead of in my home. I didn’t know what I was going to do if my air conditioning unit was underwater. I couldn’t have air conditioning in the house, and I was even afraid to use my electric. All I can imagine was everyone in my home being electrocuted when I turn on a light. I called the HVAC company and asked if that amount of water was going to do damage to my AC unit, and he told me he didn’t think it would. Once the water receded, all I had to do was call the HVAC company and someone would come out to inspect the air conditioner for me. In the meantime, I told my kids to grab some personal items, and we headed to a hotel. I would not go without air or lights and neither did my kids.

Trust me. I'll have the AC unit fixed in no time.

There are no words that I mistrust more than when someone tells me to trust them before they tell me what I’m supposed to trust them to do.

When my children tell me to trust them when they say they will be home by curfew, I know they’re going to be late.

So, it should not have surprised my husband one bit when he told me to trust him to have the AC unit fixed in no time, I didn’t trust him. Not only does my husband not know anything about air conditioning, but he knows very little about electronics. When he said he was going to have the air conditioning unit fixed in no time, I went into survival mode. I called our son, who is an HVAC technician, and all I said was help. Mike told me to calm down and tell me what was happening. I told him that his father told me to trust him, and he would have the AC unit fixed in no time. Mike said oh and hung up the phone. Half an hour later, Mike was at the door with his two kids in tow. He loudly asked where his father was. I told him he was out in the backyard looking at the air conditioning unit. As Mike kissed me on the forehead, he said to have fun with the grandchildren out loud, but he told me he’d take care of it. Nearly an hour later, my two granddaughters and I had dinner ready for everyone as their father and my husband came walking into the house. Mike said he didn’t know why ‌he came to visit, but he was glad he was here to help his dad fix the air conditioning unit.

When you're done complaining, call the HVAC company.

My mother was always telling me that one of these days my mouth was going to get me into trouble.

Of course, as a kid, I never thought that mom knew what she was talking about.

Now that I’m older, I’m still quick to make a comment. My husband is ‌the person to whom most of my comments I made. Last week, we were at our daughter’s house for dinner. From the moment we walked in until we sat down to eat, all we heard was her and her husband complaining about the HVAC system. They needed a new air conditioning unit before summer began. Their heating was inefficient, and the girls were always complaining about their bedroom being too cold. They needed a new furnace, but they wanted a furnace just like the gas furnace they had now, but they didn’t make them anymore. About halfway through the main course, I had enough. I turned to my daughter, and I told her that when she’s done complaining, she should call the HVAC company, because I didn’t want to hear it anymore. I turned to my granddaughters and started laughing with them. For the first time in her life, my daughter was speechless. Her husband said nothing for about 30 seconds and then he turned to my daughter. He said he had been telling her to call the HVAC company for the last three weeks, so maybe with your mom saying something, it will finally get done. I almost told my son-in-law that he could’ve made the phone call to the HVAC company if they had been complaining for the last three weeks, but I didn’t.

You really should hang heavy drapes up to those windows.

My daughter used to live down south. I visited her several times, and every time I told her she needed to put heavy drapes up to her living room windows. I would walk into that room, and the sun coming through the wall of windows was blinding. Not only was the sun difficult on the eyes, but it was terribly hot, even with the air conditioning running. She seemed to be clueless to the idea that the reason for her energy bills going so high was because she didn’t have any drapes up to those windows. With heavy drapes, the living room would be cooler. If the living room was cooler from the lack of solar heating, the air conditioning unit would not be running as much. Instead of the air conditioning unit needing to be replaced in five years, with the help of drapes, she could prolong that replacement for an extra 3, 4, or maybe five years. I couldn’t believe it when she told me ‌they could not afford to buy drapes for their living room. That’s when I asked her how much her energy bill was the previous month. She told me but said it was only because the air-conditioning was running. I shook my head and told her that was exactly what I was talking about. The drapes would only cost half as much as her air conditioning bills for one month, and she would probably save that much money every month. It took her six months to buy the drapes, and six minutes to call and tell me I was right about the energy bills and the air conditioning unit.
