I get cold easily

They keep the air conditioning on high blast during the entire day.

I live in the northeast region of the country, so we have mostly cool weather throughout the year. I make sure that I have my furnace running in great shape because I am always so cold. In the winter, I am the type of person who is always layered up. I also always wear thick, wool socks, and typically I am under a blanket. I make sure that I have my furnace serviced annually to ensure that there are no issues. The last thing I want is to suddenly be without heat in the middle of the winter. However, I get cold easily even in the warm months of the year. In fact, I don’t even have an air conditioning system. My family always gives me a hard time and says that I keep the house too warm, but I like to be warm. Any time I go over to one of their homes in the summer, I am absolutely freezing. I always keep a sweatshirt in my car. They keep the air conditioning on high blast during the entire day. I find that I am shivering and desperate to get out of there. In my home, I have one window air conditioning unit that I put on in the bedroom just a few times a year. It has to be a record setting high temperature for me to want the air conditioning on. I know some people think I’m crazy, but we all have our temperature preferences.

Portable air conditioners are superior to window units

When I was younger and living in apartment buildings, I always relied on window air conditioning units to keep the place cool.

They never did that good of a job.

Not to mention, they were really noisy and used a lot of electricity. I remember there were a few times when I was running the air conditioning so much that I blew a fuse and would lose power for a little while. The place would get so hot so quickly. Now, I have realized that there is a much better option when it comes to cooling a space that does not have central cooling. Portable air conditioners are far superior than the window units I’ve had. First of all, portable air conditioners are way more efficient. They are standing units, so you are able to move and position the air conditioner much more freely than the window units, even if you have yours connected to a window. They are also available with much more cooling power. Another perk is that you can roll them from one room to another. Whenever I used a window air conditioning unit, it was always so heavy and difficult to get in the window. I certainly had no intention of moving it once it was installed. With the portable unit, it’s easy to roll the unit from one room to another if need be. Honestly, it would have made my life so much easier if I had a portable air conditioner when I was a renter.

Searching for additional air conditioning

One of the things I love about my home is that we have a porch attached to the home that leads into the backyard.

The porch is a room within our house, but our central HVAC system does not extend to it. It can get very cold in the winter, but we just keep it closed off during that time of year. Up until this point, we have not had any air conditioning on the porch. However, as our kids get older and have friends over more often, the porch is used more and more often. My husband and I have decided that we want to add some form of supplemental air conditioning that we can use when it is needed, but that we won’t have to run constantly like our central air system. We are unsure of whether or not we should get a ductless mini split or a portable air conditioner. A ductless mini split is more expensive, but it is designed to cool a specific room, it does not need to be near a window, and it is a higher quality machine. That being said, we don’t necessarily need anything fancy. A portable air conditioner is affordable, more powerful than a window unit, and it can be moved around if we ever need to put it somewhere else. I’m not sure which method of air conditioning we will pick, but we want to make a decision before the summer starts.

Humidity damaging the floors in my home

Over the summer, the climate in my region is hot and humid.

I thought that just having air conditioning and keeping the windows open would be enough to compensate for these weather conditions.

In the past, I’ve still noticed the humidity, but I figured I was doing the best I could to combat it. This past winter, I had brand new hardwood floors put into my home. When the summer rolled around, I noticed that the floors were starting to change in shape and even splinter in some spots. I contacted the company that installed the floors and they came and took a look. They said that the humidity in my home was causing the damage and my best option was to look into a whole home dehumidifier. I contacted a Heating and Cooling company immediately because I didn’t want the damage to get worse. They sent an HVAC technician to take a look. The technician said I was able to install a dehumidifier that would attach directly to my existing central air system. As the home cools from the central air, the dehumidifier also operates and removes moisture from the air. I told them to install the dehumidifier as soon as possible, and they were able to make it happen later that week. Luckily, the floors were not permanently damaged. I’m glad I was able to fix the problem before my brand new floors were completely ruined.
